​Skiing and snowboarding are two of the can’t-miss winter activities if you’re looking to enjoy some wide open spaces as temperatures drop. Whether you are a seasoned skier or considering the sport for the first time, the region offers options for everyone! Hit the slopes of Gore Mountain, a four-peak ski center in North Creek. Gore is considered the king of Lake George Area skiing with 115 unique and varied trails to explore along with 14 modern lifts and amenities to make sure you stay warm and comfortable. Skiers and riders of any experience level will find plenty of fun and adventure at West Mountain. West is a first-rate family ski center offering 30 trails of easy to expert terrain. There is no better place to get your family acquainted with skiing or riding. Let the kids take runs in the terrain park or brush up on your own fundamentals with their expert instruction program. Ski and snowboard rentals are made easy with the help of West’s experienced rental staff. The resort has plenty of hills perfect for sledding or tubing too.

Cross-country skiing on Adirondack trails is another great winter workout, whether you’re a classic, touring or skate skier. The area’s miles of cross-country ski trails offer all difficulty levels and some are even lighted to explore at night! Garnet Hill Lodge in North River is a full-service resort offering lodging, dining, nordic ski trails and rentals. The North Creek Ski Bowl offers nordic and snowshoe terrain with trails lighted into the early evening hours. Call ahead for ticket availability and trail conditions.

Snowshoe on just about any area hiking trail for a winter trekking experience. Summits like Fifth Peak, the Pinnacle, and the Schumann Preserve at Pilot Knob are popular and many of the quiet walking trails around the region are worth exploring. Beginners will enjoy the simple, traversing path of Rush Pond Trail and experienced hikers can opt for something longer and more challenging, such as Cat Mountain.

The lakes and streams that dot the region become ice fishing hotspots that can land you big lake trout or perch. Several large lakes offer multiple access points to get out on the ice. Bring your own gear or contact a local fishing guide to learn tips and tricks that will have you reeling in a fish in no time. Shops spanning the region are stocked full of bait, rods and lures.

Sledding or tubing, anyone? West Mountain Ski Area offers 2-hour time slots for daytime and nighttime tubing. Four upper and six lower lanes are accessed by a magic carpet ride to the top. Or take your own sled to one of our community sledding hills for some good old-fashioned sledding fun.

Snowmobiling in the Lake George Area is a one-of-a-kind wintertime activity. Multiple volunteer snowmobile clubs take excellent care of trail systems throughout the region, ensuring a top-notch riding experience. Trails offer a mix of long straightaways through wooded corridors to climbs up tall mountains with glorious views.

Relive your favorite childhood memories by lacing up a pair of ice skates. Frozen lakes double as ice skating rinks that are perfect for fast laps, leisurely circles or pick-up hockey.
