North Hempstead has announced announce that the town’s Project Independence “Blankets of Love” will be making a donation of youth blankets, baby blankets, and baby hats to local community organizations.

“Blankets of Love” is a crocheting and knitting group formed by Project Independence members. The group provides an opportunity for senior residents in the community to come together and work in a collaborative manner on a meaningful and rewarding project.

“Thank you so much to our ‘Blankets of Love’ participants, who made this donation possible,” said North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “The blankets turned out beautifully, and your hard work will put a smile on so many faces this holiday season.”

The group has been working on their projects remotely since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. They have created 42 blankets and 13 baby hats. Items were donated to the North Hempstead’s Veterans Donation Drive, Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park, and Bethany House.

North Hempstead’s Veterans Donation Drive, benefiting the Northport Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center, is a holiday donation collection designed to assist and give back to the veterans who served our country.

The Ronald McDonald House charities help provide accommodations for families with sick children seeking medical treatment. Families are provided the support they need in order to stay close to their children.

Bethany House addresses the needs of homeless families providing emergency shelter and services for women and their children since 1978.

“Blankets of Love” is currently meeting virtually on Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. For more information on the program, please call 516-869-6311
