Great Neck Library Election
The Great Neck Library Annual Election will be held on Monday, Oct. 30, 2017 from
10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., followed by the Board of Trustees Annual Meeting.
Eligible voters will elect two persons to the Board of Trustees for two four-year terms (Jan. 2018 – Jan. 2022) and two persons to the Nominating Committee for two three-year terms (Jan. 2018 – Jan. 2021) to fill the seats that will be expiring in Jan. 2018. Those elected will take office at the Library Association Annual Reorganization Meeting on Jan. 30, 2018.
Residents living North of Northern Boulevard vote at the Main Library, Community Room, 159 Bayview Avenue, Great Neck 11023. Residents living south of Northern Boulevard vote at the Parkville Branch, 10 Campbell Street (off Lakeville Road), New Hyde Park 11040.

Opioid Addiction and Overdose: What Parents and Teens Need to Know
Come to this important program, co-sponsored by the Great Neck Public Schools and Great Neck Library, about opioid addiction and overdose on Wednesday, Nov. 1 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.
If you don’t think it can happen to someone you care about, think again. Addictions and overdoses can happen to anyone. Opioid addiction is a national health crisis which has affected many families in our area. Parents and teens will hear from and meet a Long Island recent high school graduate who is currently in recovery from opioid addiction.
The Total Community Involvement committee of the Great Neck Public School UPTC is sponsoring this presentation with an expert panel followed by Q&A. The moderator is Jacqueline Harounian of North Shore Action, which is also a sponsor of the event. Panelists include Cathy Samuels from CASA Manhasset; Maria Elisa Cuadra, CEO, COPAY Inc., Detective Pamela Stark of the Nassau County Police Task Force on Opioids; Amanda Cioffi from LICADD; and Zachary Goldfarb, EMT from Vigilant Fire Company.

Veterans’ Fair at Parkville Branch of Great Neck Library
The Parkville Branch of the Great Neck Library will hold its first Veterans’ Fair on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Parkville Branch, 10 Campbell Street (off Lakeville Road), in New Hyde Park 11040.
Veterans of all ages can meet and speak with representatives from groups that provide services to veterans to learn about different programs, social groups, benefits, and more that are available to them.
New Beginnings Singles 50 Plus facilitated by Marla Matthews
Join the conversation or just come and listen when Marla Matthews, social worker and television talk show host of The Relationship Journey facilitates this discussion, social and support group meetup on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 4:00 p.m. at the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. If you are divorced, widowed, single, or an empty-nester age 50 plus who would like a new beginning, come and be inspired to make new friends, network and learn new skills towards reinventing yourself.
Jia-Yi He Harmonica Virtuoso and String Quartet at Main
Acclaimed harmonica virtuoso Jia-Yi He, accompanied by a string quartet, will perform works from classical to modern on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 2:00 p.m. in the community room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.
Jia-Yi performs around the globe playing different kinds of harmonicas: chromatic, diatonic, tremolo, bass, wheel, keyboard as well as the largest and the smallest harmonica in the world.
He is the recipient of prestigious awards in America, Europe, and the Far East. He has also appeared as a soloist with the China National Symphony Orchestra, Nassau Symphony Pops Orchestra and numerous orchestras worldwide, and has recorded harmonica music for a number of movies and radio stations in addition to his compact discs. Additionally, Jia-Yi was a soloist at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Shea Stadium, the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations and other premier venues, and serves on the faculty of the Turtle Bay Music School in New York City.
International Games Day at Main
Participate in International Games Week by playing games at the main library. There will be board games that you can play with friends and family, as well as a video game tournament with prizes on Sunday, Oct. 29 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Feel free to bring your own games as well. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.
Wednesday Matinee Film at Main
The next Wednesday Matinee at Main, about an interracial couple in 1941 who are swept up in the tides of history, will be shown on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Refer to the Library Newsletter, film brochure or website for further information on the films scheduled. Priority seating is given to Great Neck School District residents. Please bring your library card, driver’s license or other ID showing your Great Neck School District address. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.
Thursday Film Encore at Station
The next encore film, about an interracial couple in 1941 who are swept up in the tides of history, will be shown on Nov. 2 at 2:00 p.m. at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (second level), Gardens at Great Neck Plaza, above Best Market.

GNL Tech Squad at Main and Parkville
The GNL Tech Squad is back by popular demand at the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue, and Parkville Branch, 10 Campbell Street (off Lakeville Road), New Hyde Park. Interested patrons can learn how to use their iPad or tablet, social media, Microsoft Office, smartphone apps, and more.
People are welcome to bring in specific questions and issues, or just learn the basics of technology and receive one-on-one support from the library’s teen volunteers. If interested, stop by the Reference area at the Main Library and Parkville Branch between 3:30 and 5:00 p.m. on the following Wednesdays: Oct. 25; Nov. 1, 8 and 15. Seiko Group presents “Spirits of Autumn,” an Ikebana flower arrangement display
All are welcome to enjoy the Spirits of Autumn Ikebana Floral Arrangements at the opening reception to be held on Thursday, Nov. 2 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Main Library Lower Lobby, 159 Bayview Avenue.
Members of the Seiko Group created twenty Ikebana floral arrangements on display. Ikebana is the art of Japanese flower arrangement, in which the arrangement is considered a living thing and nature and humanity are brought together. “Ike” means to arrange, and “bana” (originates from the word Hana) means flowers.
Socrates Salon with Ron Gross at Main
Join the next Socrates Salon with conversation host Ron Gross when the topic will be “Food: What does it mean in your life? What does it mean for our planet?” on Friday, Nov. 3 at 3:00 p.m. in the large multipurpose room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Share your life experiences, knowledge, and wisdom about topics that matter.
