With beautiful Baxter’s Pond as background and inspiration, the Baxter’s Pond Foundation hosted its first children’s art event on Saturday, Oct. 8.

A half-dozen children took part, experimenting with watercolor and acrylic under the guidance of artist and volunteer Caroline Vickers. The event was held outdoors on the plaza overlooking the waterfall and pond, with fall foliage already showing its colors.

“The children’s paintings were truly lovely and they all enjoyed being outdoors and trying to capture the beautiful natural scene right in front of them,” said Vickers.

Baxter’s Pond Foundation, the nonprofit environmental steward of Baxter’s Pond and the surrounding Barbara Johnson Park & Preserve, plans to hold more such events for children and adults, according to Kim and John Keiserman, co-presidents of the Foundation.

Next on Baxter’s Pond Foundation’s calendar is a park clean-up event on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. – noon. Volunteers are needed to help and to help plant, no advance registration is needed. Please bring your own gardening gloves; garbage bags will be provided.

For event updates, please check out www.baxterspond.org or follow Baxter’s Pond Foundation on Facebook and Instagram. The Foundation also seeks volunteers at all levels of gardening experience for its Gardening Committee. For information, please contact Holly Byrne at [email protected].

Historic Baxter’s Pond is the centerpiece of Port Washington’s Village of Baxter Estates. While the Pond and Park are owned by Nassau County, since 2004, Baxter’s Pond Foundation has maintained the area surrounding the Pond and the Park.

Known for its colorful gardens planted along Shore Road and Central Drive and the seasonal flowers gracing the stone pillars at the entrance, the Park is a visual delight to all who drive by or stroll the grounds.
