The Town of North Hempstead will ignite a public 10-foot Hanukkah menorah erected at the Town Hall located on Plandome Rd, followed by a community-wide celebration on December 23rd, the second night of the eight-day holiday, at 4:00 p.m.
The ceremony, organized by the Town of North Hempstead and Chabad of Manhasset, will feature a special break dancers performance led by Emphasis Entertainment. Following the menorah lighting ceremony, hundreds will dance, sing and eat the night away. Live music and a human size dreidel mascot will enliven the celebration. latkes & donuts for all.
The event is cosponsored by North Shore University Hospital of Northwell Health, Raindew Manhasset, Showcase Kitchens, Karen Sabag, Starbucks & Arizona.
“The Menorah serves as a message of freedom, of good over evil, light over darkness. A Menorah is a nine-branched candelabrum which obtained particular significance to the Jewish people during their rebellion nearly 2500 years ago. The Menorah symbolizes the liberty to express oneself ethically, culturally and religiously. As such, it is an indication of the diversity and pluralism which are so important to our society. Its display during the holiday season reminds us of these precious liberties secured by our Constitution,” said Rabbi Mendel Paltiel.
Today, the unprecedented public display of Hanukkah has become a staple of Jewish cultural and religious life, forever altering the American practice and awareness of the festival. Manhasset’s menorah is one of more than 15,000 large public menorahs sponsored by Chabad in more than 100 countries around the world, including in front of landmarks such as the White House, the Eiffel Tower, and the Kremlin helping children and adults of all walks of life discover and enjoy the holiday message
Throughout Long Island, Chabad will be presenting scores of Hanukkah events and celebrations, including public Menorah Lightings, Giant Menorahs made out of ice and lego, Menorah Parades, Latke Parties, Giant Dreidel Houses, “Chanukah Wonderlands” and more.
