All boys in first through fifth graces are invited to join Roslyn’s Cub Scout Pack 267.

The pack meets Monday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., at Temple Beth Sholom on Roslyn Road with their our famous “Raingutter Regatta,” a racing event that is the sailboat equivalent of the Pinewood Derby.

Each boy makes his own sailboat from a wooden kit, and then paints and decorates the boat to make it unique. The boys decide on where to place the keel and the rudder, and they design the size and shape of the sail.

The adult leaders will set up the inflatable raingutter and fill it with water, so the boats can race side-by-side, two-by-two. The boats are propelled by blowing on the sail, either directly or through a drinking straw.

“There are definite strategies in play here,” Cub Scout Committee Chair Len Bergman said. “A smooth steady breath is always better than a series of forceful puffs. Each year the boys look forward to this event and the Pinewood Derby. We decided to open it up to the entire community this year, so even non-scouts can join in the fun.”

“Win or lose, the young boys take pride in having done their best,” Dr. Jay Dubowsky, the Pack’s long-time Cubmaster, said. “Cub Scout derbies like this one teach craft skills, the rules of fair play, and good sportsmanship—things they will remember all their lives.”

Cub Scout Pack 267 is open to all boys in the greater Roslyn area including, Roslyn Heights, Searingtown, Greenvale and Albertson.

The Pack is sponsored by Temple Beth Sholom and has served the Roslyn area since 1994.  For information on membership, contact Steven Cahn at 516-621-3890 or at [email protected].
