Garden City Park fourth graders learn coding

Garden City Park School fourth-graders in John Contratti’s class have been virtually meeting with the district’s coding/robotics teacher Lara Holzkamp each Thursday.

Holzkamp utilizes Google Meet to present the lesson to the students, as well as answer their questions and provide tech support when necessary. Contratti also incorporates additional STEM activities to enhance the program with his class.

The class has been learning the basics of Python coding. Holzkamp uses the platform Code Monkey to introduce the students to computer language.

“The program allows the students to problem solve and write programs in a way that is engaging and scaffolded,” Holzkamp explained. “It also helps to develop their coding skills and teaches them to use reasoning and sequencing.”

Holzkamp teaches coding districtwide year-round to students in first through sixth grade. The students participate in the program weekly for half of the school year.
