On Friday, July 22, Mayor Paul A. Pereira hosted students from the Mineola School ENL Summer Enrichment Program. Twenty students and their teachers spent the morning touring Mineola Village Hall and learning about various departments of the village. The mayor explained the workings of local government, his role and that of the Board of Trustees, as well as a brief lesson in the history of Mineola. Mayor Pereira also spoke to the students about his experiences growing up in Mineola as a student whose first language was not English. He stressed the importance of hard work to get ahead saying “take the opportunity your parents gave you through their sacrifice, and make the most of it” stressing his confidence in their future success.
The students were engaged, asked many questions and left wanting to learn more. The visit was capped with some pizza and soda.
