The Edward Smith Mineola Lions Club recently made a $12,000 donation to sponsor two guide dogs for the visually impaired. The Club presented the donation to the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind.

The guide dogs undergo extensive training, and once their training is complete, provide visually impaired persons the means to retain their mobility and independence.

The dogs were named Evelyn in honor of Evelyn Smith, wife of Ed Smith whom the Club is named after and Ginny in honor of Virginia Dittko, director of the Diabetes Education Center at NYU Winthrop Hospital.

The Club also donated $1000 to the League of Yes, a charitable organization that sponsors baseball programs for people with disabilities.
