The Hillside Public Library is sponsoring a Basic First Aid Supplies Drive to support Ukraine. Needed items include Band Aids, Sterile Eye Dressings; Gauze Dressings; Safety Pins; Tweezers and Scissors; Skin Rash Creams; Pain Relievers and Digital Thermometers. There is a bin at the library for your donations, and we thank you for your generosity.

Hillside Public Library is partnering with Long Island Coalition for the Homeless in a School Supply Drive. Needed items include the following: Staplers and staples; Post-Its; Pencil Sharpeners; Lunch boxes; Highlighters; Paper Clips; 3 Hole Punches; White out; Permanent Markers and Backpacks. Donation boxes are at the library.

PROGRAMS and EVENTS
Weekly Summer Trivia – Baseball – Virtual Monday, August 1 – Friday, August 5. Sign up to be emailed the Baseball trivia!Trivia will be emailed out on Monday, August 1 at 10am. You can either complete the Google Form sent out OR complete the sheet and either bring it to the reference desk or email it back to [email protected] with the subject HILLSIDE SCIENCE TRIVIA by Friday, August 5 at 11:59 PM. All who return a trivia sheet will be entered in to a raffle to win a prize, regardless of score!

Summer Bingo! – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Monday, August 1 at 12 noon and at 6:00 p.m. Join us for fun games of Bingo! Winners will win prizes!

Spanish 101 – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor
Tuesday, August 2 and Wednesday, August 3 at 12 noon. Have you wanted to learn Spanish before, but just haven’t been able to? Join us for these classes led by aspiring Spanish teacher Anna Komninos! No prior knowledge of Spanish is required! This program is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

The Titanic Epilogue: New York After the Great Sinking – Virtual Tuesday, August 2 at 6:30 p.m. Explore Oceans of Possibilities with historian and tour guide Dave Gardner! His passion is speaking to others about the ill-fated maiden journey of the “Greatest Ship in the World” and its aftermath. With his personal collection of historical photographs and vintage postcards, Dave will cover the tense days of high hopes, a play-by-play of the sinking’s impact on New York and its citizens, the arrival of the survivors, the media spectacle, the official investigation, the dispelled century-old myths, forgotten plaques, statues, gravestones and memorials found throughout New York dedicated to the Titanic’s 1,496 lost souls.

Getting Started with Libby – Virtual Wednesday, August 3 at 2 p.m. This event is hosted by Overdrive/Libby. Please go to the library’s website to register. Join us for our one-hour Getting Started with Libby webinar, and learn Libby with the Experts! This webinar will show you everything you need to know for your day-to-day life in the library reading app, Libby. The session will close with a mini-quiz and live Q&A. Want to learn Libby, but can’t attend one of our monthly sessions live? Sessions will be recorded and emailed to everyone registered 24 hours after the webinar. Oceans of Possibility: Three Sheets to the Wind – Virtual Thursday, August 4 at 6:30 p.m. Calling all word lovers, factophiles, ocean dreamers, and the conversationally curious! Author Cynthia Barrett highlights her book, “Three Sheets to the Wind: The Nautical Origins of Everyday Expressions”, a fascinating compilation of common English expressions that were coined at sea.

Stemtastic: Boats Afloat! – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Monday, August 1 at 5 p.m. Ages: 7 years- 10 years. Build your own balloon power boat and sail it in a portable ocean! Then create an ocean current and discover how it affects your boats journey!

Under the Sea: Story & Craft – Children’s Room Tuesday, August 2 at 11:30 p.m. Grades: (going into) K-2. Let’s dive down and explore ocean animals with stories, songs, and a craft!

Time for Kids: Summer Sea Turtle! – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Tuesday, August 2 at 4:30 p.m. Ages: 3 years- 7 years (with parent/caregiver). Come join A Time for Kids, Inc. as we explore Oceans of Possibilities in this family fun program! Activities include music, movement, fine & gross motor development and storytelling! There will also even be a Summer Sea Turtle Craft!

3D Printing Painting – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Wednesday, August 3 at 3 p.m. Grades 5 – 12. Come see a real 3D printer in action! Paint a 3D printed figure of your very own.

Encanto Storytime & Sing Along! – Children’s Room Wednesday, August 3 at 5:30 p.m. Ages: 4 years- 8 years (with parent/caregiver). Come meet Mirabel, Isabela, & Bruno! Join them for a story & sing along with some of your favorite Encanto songs! Under the Sea Balloons – All Purpose Room 2nd Floor Thursday, August 4 at 4:30 p.m. Grades: (going into) 2-4. Learn how to twist and create balloon sea creatures!
