The Hillside Public Library is sponsoring a Basic First Aid Supplies Drive to support Ukraine. Needed items include Band Aids, Sterile Eye Dressings; Gauze Dressings; Safety Pins; Tweezers and Scissors; Skin Rash Creams; Pain Relievers and Digital Thermometers. There is a bin at the library for your donations, and we thank you for your generosity.

Hillside Public Library is partnering with Long Island Coalition for the Homeless in a Lunch Box Drive. Needed items include the following: Lunch Boxes, Juice Boxes, and non-perishable food items, such as granola bars. Donation boxes are at the library.

PROGRAMS and EVENTS
Paint Night: Perseid Meteor Shower! – Virtual Friday, August 12 at 7 p.m. Sketch and paint a wonderous meteor shower – and don’t miss the actual Perseid Meteor Shower tonight and tomorrow night! From beginners to advanced sketchers and painters, enjoy a fun and relaxing evening painting with Alma in the comfort of your own home. For a list of supplies needed, please go to the library’s website.

Weekly Summer Trivia – Movies – Virtual Monday, August 15 – Friday, August 19. Sign up to be emailed the Baseball trivia! Trivia will be emailed out on Monday, August 15 at 10am. You can either complete the Google Form sent out OR complete the sheet and either bring it to the reference desk or email it back to [email protected] with the subject HILLSIDE MOVIE TRIVIA by Friday, August 19 at 11:59 PM. All who return a trivia sheet will be entered in to a raffle to win a prize, regardless of score!

Seashell Mosaic – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Monday, August 15 at 6 p.m. Try your hand at creating a miniature Sailor’s Valentine; a mariner’s historic souvenir created from small colorful shells and given to a loved one. Learning from Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum staff, each registered patron will be able to create and take home their own seashell mosaic.

A $5 materials fee will be collected at the start of the program. This program is for adults only. This program is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Detox Your Mind through Meditation – Virtual Tuesday, August 16 at 6:30 p.m. Join Gaurav Singh long time meditator and learn how to implement a simple yet very powerful meditation technique that can be life changing. By befriending our mind we can wipe the slate clean and detoxify our negative thought patterns and calm the body.

Gaurav is an experienced management consultant working as a Senior Manager with Ernst & Young. Gaurav is also very passionate about meditation and has been practicing meditation for over 15 years. This program is brought to you courtesy of Nassau Libraries Health Share.

Project Independence – BRAIN GAMES – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Wednesday, August 17: 1:30 – 3 p.m. Limited space available. Registration required. North Hempstead Project Independence invites all Town residents 60 and over. If you are interested in participating, please call 311 or 516-869-6311 to register.

Mystery Book Club – In Person and Virtual Wednesday, August 17 at 6:30 p.m. The book being discussed is: The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz. “This staggeringly good literary thriller is about a staggeringly good literary thriller written by a failed novelist who has stolen the book’s plot from a deceased student.”

In-Person: Plant and Garden Club – Modular Room, 1st Floor Thursday, August 18 at 6:30 p.m. Calling all gardeners, of all levels and interests! Join the Plant and Garden Club and exchange seeds, rooted cuttings, and plants with fellow gardeners of all skills and interests. The Library Plant and Garden Club meets every 3rd Thursday of the month through September 2022.

CHILDREN and YOUNG ADULT EVENTS
Zumba (Youth) – Virtual Monday, August 15 at 5:30 p.m. All Ages Youth – Kids/Tweens/Teens. Join Kristen Fonte as she virtually guides you in this dance-based exercise class!

Kahoot Trivia – Virtual Tuesday, August 16 at 7 p.m. All Ages – Family Fun! Test your knowledge on your favorite foods of the summer, from sweet ice cream to yummy BBQ! A prize will be awarded to the night’s trivia contest winner.

An Ocean of Fun with Johnda Ferrari – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Thursday, August 18 at 4:30 p.m. Ages: 7 years- 11 years. Learn all about the creatures of the ocean with Johnda. Experiments, games & crafts!

Virtual Tea Tasting Summer Fruit Teas! Thursday, August 18 at 7 p.m. Ages: Teen – Adult. Join our Librarian Ms. Ambadjes in tasting a variety of different fruit teas. These teas can be enjoyed hot, but will be very refreshing when iced! Pick up your tea goody bags and instuctions the week of the program, so you can sip along as you learn about each type of tea. (We will email registrants when tea is ready for pickup). *Please only register and pick up teas if you intend on coming to the virtual event. The Tea goody bags are for those attending.

Play Hooray –Children’s Room, 2nd Floor Friday, August 19 at 12 noon. Ages: 9 months- 5 years (with parent/caregiver). Stories, music and movement activities with Mollie the Mouse!

Virtual Paint Night Friday, August 19 at 7 p.m. Grades 5 – 12. Join our artist Alma as she virtually guides you in a step-by-step painting. No experience necessary. Beginners welcome!
