The Hillside Public Library is sponsoring a Basic First Aid Supplies Drive to support Ukraine. Needed items include Band Aids, Sterile Eye Dressings; Gauze Dressings; Safety Pins; Tweezers and Scissors; Skin Rash Creams; Pain Relievers and Digital Thermometers. There is a bin at the library for your donations, and we thank you for your generosity.

Hillside Public Library is partnering with Long Island Coalition for the Homeless in a Lunch Box Drive. Needed items include the following: Lunch Boxes, Juice Boxes, and non-perishable food items, such as granola bars. Donation boxes are at the library.

PROGRAMS and EVENTS
Life Mapping with Lou Ann – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Fridays, September 16, 23 and 30 at 10:30 a.m. Life Mapping is a positive exercise that can help a person track down the things and ideas that they value in life. It can help them to spot the positive thoughts that drive their life. A person can add their achievements, beliefs, challenges. Life Maps can be of different types. This is an example of the workshop that we offer. It’s a visual timeline; a person can create a whole map describing memorable moments of their life.

Paint Night: Celebrate the September Harvest Moon – Virtual Friday, September 16 at 7 p.m. Sketching and Acrylics with Alma. For beginners to advanced sketchers and painters. Everyone is welcome. Enjoy a fun and relaxing evening painting in the comfort of your own home! For a list of supplies needed, please go to the library’s website.

A Day in the Life of a Healthy Brain with Dr. Fern Engelson – Virtual Tuesday, September 20 at 11 a.m. This empowering and unique class that combines lecture and movement is an opportunity for you to learn how you can play a more active role in improving and maintaining your brain health through the use of brain balancing exercises, Qi Gong movements, calming breathing techniques and other healthy tips. In-Person Medicare Updates and Options – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Tuesday, September 20 at 2 p.m. The Nassau County Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) is offering an informative session on Medicare Updates and Options. including Social Security and Medicare cost of living and premium increases. Stony Brook Health Education Series: Cancer Prevention & Screening – Virtual Wednesday, September 21 at 12 noon. Don’t delay your cancer screenings. In-Person Nassau County Property Tax Exemptions Assistance Wednesday, September 21: 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Contact: Nassau County Department of Assessment (516) 571-1500 [email protected]. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, in partnership with the County Legislature, will be hosting a series of Property Tax Exemptions Workshops beginning on September 6 through October 27 at libraries and community meeting halls throughout the county. One-on-One assistance is available on a first come-first served basis. Please go to the library’s website for a list of needed documents, and other relevant information.

Mystery Book Club – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor and Virtual Wednesday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m. The book being discussed is: Find Me by Alafair Burke. “The disappearance of a young woman leaves her best friend reeling and an NYPD homicide detective digging into her own past in this twisty mystery about the power of female friendships.”

Hearing Loss Seminar – Virtual Thursday, September 22 at 1 p.m. Presented by: Dr. Maja Svrakic of Northwell Health. Bring your questions! Dr. Svrakic will discuss your questions, plus the prevalence of hearing loss; why hearing loss should be treated and what happens if it is not; who should you see and when; what are some hearing device options and do they work; when is surgery an option for hearing loss. In-Person Downton Abbey at the Library! – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Thursday, September 22 at 6:30 p.m. Presented by Monica Randall The British TV series Downton Abbey has taken the world by storm with its sprawling manor house and Upstairs Downstairs intrigues. When the American tycoons and robber barons, during the turn of the last century, turned to European nobility for inspiration on how to live in style, they constructed their own showplaces such as Planting Fields, Old Westbury Gardens, Mill Neck Manor, Oheka Castle, to name a few, by copying the great English manor houses. This presentation will display how the Long Island Gold Coast continues to carry on these English traditions.

Brain Fitness Fun for Everybody! – Virtual Thursday, September 22 at 6:30 p.m. This class is uniquely designed for those who are interested in being proactive in maintaining and enhancing their cognitive functioning! The Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center’s Brain Fitness Workshop is intended for those who do not have a diagnosis of memory impairment. At the Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center, “we believe you’re never too young or old to start a brain fitness regimen in a safe, friendly, and socially stimulating environment”.

Time for Kids : Climbing to New Heights – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Monday, September 19 at 4:30 p.m. Ages: 3 years- 7 years (with parent/caregiver). Come join A Time for Kids, Inc. as we climb to new heights in this family fun preschool program. Activities include music, movement, fine & gross motor development and storytelling! There will also be a Skyscraper craft!

Kahoot Trivia : Welcome Fall – Virtual Monday, September 19 at 7 p.m. All Ages – Family Fun! Join us for an evening of Fall based trivia! A prize will be awarded to the night’s trivia contest winner! *Please remember Kahoot Trivia works best with 2 devices – any combination of a computer/laptop/tablet/ipad/phone will work.

Fall Fun: Story & Craft! – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Thursday, September 22 at 4:30 p.m. Ages: Pre-K & Kindergarten (with parent/caregiver). Join Mrs. S. & Mr. B. for some fall stories and fun adventures with a simple craft!
