Pumpkins bring preschool families together

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, the grounds at the L’Dor V’Dor Early Childhood Center at the Community Synagogue were transformed into a pumpkin patch.

The preschool’s yearly tradition of “Pumpkin Day at the ECC” was expanded this year, extending invitations to parents to come and participate in a fall festival.

“After so many years of parents not being allowed into our school building due to COVID, this year especially we are trying to create new, fun experiences for our community to come together,” said Jen Schiffer, ECC director. “The response from our families has been very positive, and with so many new families moving to town, parents are excited to make new friends through the school, and to feel connected.”

Hours before the students arrived at school, North Shore Garden Center in Port Washington delivered 150 pumpkins to the school, transforming the grounds into a sea of orange. Beginning at 10 am, parents of pre-kindergarten arrived to meet up with their ECC child to not only pick out the perfect pumpkin but also to enjoy fall-themed crafts and a photo booth to capture a special memory of the day.

Parents and children alike enjoyed time outside in the “patch” before sitting down to decorate their pumpkins and to engage in other craft projects. Each grade of two-, three- and four-year-old children arrived in shifts throughout the school day. The crafts and activities were specifically geared toward each age group.

Thankfully the weather held out and families were able to enjoy time outdoors mingling with one another and enjoying the fall foliage on the grounds of the synagogue property.

“We wanted this event to be extra special for our families given how hard these past few years have been for parents who weren’t able to participate in our school events with their child “, said ECC assistant director, Liad Zayit.

This event was put together by the school’s Parent Committee, a group of dedicated parents with children in the school of varying ages, who meet regularly with the school directors to plan events, and to discuss school initiatives.

Planning for this event began over the summer, was discussed at various meetings, and finally came to fruition this week. “It was so nice starting this new tradition at the ECC!” said Alana Moses, a member of the school’s Parent Committee who helped to organize the event. “We all had a wonderful time celebrating with our families and friends.”

The Early Childhood Center at The Community Synagogue has an exciting lineup of events for preschool families on the calendar for the remainder of the school year. “Fostering a sense of connection and belonging among the families is one of our top goals for the year,” said Schiffer. As evidenced on the faces of the ECC children and their parents, the school-wide Pumpkin Day and Fall Festival achieved its objective.
