The Roslyn Rotary Club honored Roslyn High School senior Rebecca Golden as the May Student of the Month and Roslyn senior Justin Leu as the June Student of the Month at their luncheon on May 17.
Leu’s community service has included volunteering at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City with patient care where he helped to create gift baskets for newly admitted patients and distributed amenities such as toothbrushes.
He helped with patient intake during clinical trials, provided directions to patients when they were lost, and tried to comfort or explain procedures to patients if they ever felt uncomfortable.
Leu has also taught autistic students how to row after coaching for the local rowing team, Port Rowing.
Golden’s community service has included volunteering through the teen programs at Temple Sinai.
Hand in Hand welcomes children from the Department of Homeless Services into the temple to make crafts, play games, and eat food with the teen volunteers. Golden also volunteered in the Cooking for a Cause program where the teens make lasagnas and other meals to donate to the Interfaith Nutrition Network, and on the SORTY Board to plan events and discuss important topics while bettering the temple community.
She has travelled to Puerto Rico to help build homes, sorted food in a food bank in Memphis, packed meals for homeless people in Israel, cleaned up a local school in Costa Rica, and helped an indigenous community in Ecuador to improve their drinking water infrastructure.
