Pet Food Drive at All Library Locations

Assemblyman Anthony D’Urso, 16th Assembly District, in partnership with Long Island Cares is holding an Annual Legislative Pet Food Drive. All Great Neck Library locations are accepting donations of unopened cans and/or bags of dog and cat food, cat box litter, treats and toys during the entire month of April. All donations are appreciated.

Tai Chi facilitated by Joseph Panico at Main

Tai Chi classes will be held on Saturdays, April 21, May 5, 12, and 19 and June 2,  9, and 16 from10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Registration fee is $40 for the entire series of eight classes. In-person registration only (cash, check or money order made payable to Great Neck Library).

Tai Chi is an internal form of martial art that is practiced for health and self- defense. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Joseph Panico has been practicing martial arts for more than 15 years. He began his Tai Chi training in 1997 at Red Dragon Kung Fu Center.

New Beginnings Singles 50 Plus at Main

Join the conversation or just come and listen when Marla Matthews, social worker and television talk show host of The Relationship Journey, facilitates the next meeting of this growing discussion, social and support group on Saturday, April 21 at 4:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Stick-Tet Musical Performance at Main

Join Steve Adelson when he performs on the Chapman Stick along with accompaniment by Bryan Carrott on vibraphone and Nydia “Liberty” Mata on percussion on Sunday, April 22 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Enjoy a mix of jazz, Latin, pop and original compositions, plus a tutorial on these unique instruments.
Steve Adelson is considered one of the premier Chapman Stick players in the world, and is a regular performer at the Long Beach Jazz Festival.

AARP Smart DriverTEK Workshop at Main

Attend an AARP Smart DriverTEK Workshop facilitated by Alan Lichtenthal on Monday, April 23 at 2 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

AARP Driver Safety has teamed up with The Hartford to develop a workshop to provide drivers with the necessary tools to navigate modern vehicle technology. Smart DriverTEK is a new educational program that helps drivers to understand current and evolving vehicle safety technologies, how to use them and to recognize how these technologies might enhance their driving safety and extend their safe driving years.

There is a $5 fee (cash, check or money order made payable to AARP). Bring payment on the day of the program.

The Art of Cuba presented by Ines Powell at Main

Explore Cuba’s vibrant art with Ines Powell on Tuesday, April 24 at 2 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Cuban art is a rich mixture of African, European and North American influences that reflect the diverse demographics of the Island. Ines Powell is an art historian and educator, and has been associated with the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1982.

Board of Trustees Meeting at Main

The next regular meeting of the Great Neck Library Board of Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Large Multipurpose Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Wednesday Matinee Film at Main

The next Wednesday Matinee at Main, a story about a renowned dressmaker in 1950’s London, will be shown on Wednesday, April 25 at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Lakeville Literary Club

Join a discussion of Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple on Wednesday, April 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the Lakeville Branch, 475 Great Neck Road. This story is a dramedy about a family in crisis after the disappearance of its brilliant, misanthropic matriarch. Register at 466-8055, ext. 232.

Mindfulness Meditation facilitated by Carolyn Carpentiere at Main

Carolyn Carpentiere will facilitate Mindfulness Meditation on Wednesday, April 25 from
7:15 to 8 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.
Meditation is a practice that strengthens focus and attention, as well as
releases stress to stay healthy. Open to all skill levels. Bring a mat or use the library’s chairs. Carolyn received her 200 hour yoga certification at Long Island Yoga School in 2009 and has continued to work in and study many other holistic solutions to health including Mindfulness Meditation and Reiki.

Parkville Book Club

Join a discussion of The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi on Thursday, April 26 at 1:30 p.m. at the Parkville Branch, 10 Campbell Street (off Lakeville Road), New Hyde Park. This story is an adult thriller about dwindling shares of the Colorado River. Register at (516) 466-8055, ext. 273.

Author Carolyn Raphael presents Grandma Poems – Not Too Sweet at Main

Carolyn Raphael, poetry coordinator for the Village of Great Neck Plaza, will read from and speak about her book, Grandma Poems – Not Too Sweet, on Thursday, April 26 at 2 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Encore Film at Station

The next encore film, a story about a renowned dressmaker in 1950’s London, will be shown on April 26 at 2:00 p.m. at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (2nd level), Gardens at Great Neck Plaza, above Best Market.

ESL with Lisa Greenwald at Main

Join Lisa Greenwald for an ESL conversation class on Friday, April 27 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Small Multipurpose Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.
Lisa began an ESL conversation class last year at the Parkville Branch of the Great Neck Library, and the Manhasset Public Library, focusing on conversation skills while incorporating correct grammar and pronunciation. No registration required.

Great Neck Library Seeking Prospective Candidates for Board of Trustees and Nominating Committee

The next Great Neck Library Election will be held on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018. There will be seven seats expiring in January 2019. Four of these seats are on the Board of Trustees (Robert Schaufeld, Joel Marcus, as well as the remaining term for the seat currently held by Josie Pizer (2021) and the remaining term for the recently vacated seat held by Francine Ferrante Krupski (2020). Three seats are on the Nominating Committee (Donald Panetta and Howard Esterces, as well as the remaining term for the seat currently vacated by Sam Gottlieb (2021).

Any nominee for a position on the Board of Trustees or the Nominating Committee must be a member of the Great Neck Library Association or a registered voter with the Nassau County Board of Elections by the Record Date of Oct. 1, 2018.
