The Art League of Long Island’s 7th Annual Juried Photography Exhibition opens in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery on Saturday, Jan. 13.  Out of 481 photographic images submitted by 101 artists, exhibition juror Rena Silverman selected only 60 to show in the gallery. Silverman will be giving a gallery talk to discuss her selections on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m.

In this exhibit, photographers from Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens were asked for their representations of narrative art.  Narrative art is art that tells a story, either as a moment in an ongoing story or as a sequence of events unfolding over time. It uses the power of the visual image to ignite imaginations, evoke emotions and capture universal cultural truths and aspirations.

Silverman writes about photography for The New York Times, where she has covered a range of artists from Chuck Close to Sylvia Plachy. Her work has also appeared in National Geographic, The Washington Post and online for NPR. She is the author of “Women of Vision: National Geographic Photographers on Assignment,” a finalist for Best Photography Book in the Seventy-Second Pictures of the Year International contest.  In 2015, she served as the Studio Art Senior Seminar’s “outside evaluator” at Dartmouth College.  To learn more about Rena Silverman, go to
