Shireinu Choir of Long Island in Concert June 12

The Shireinu Choir of Long Island is proud to announce its annual concert to be held on Sunday, June 12 at 3:00 PM. The group is returning to live performance with an exciting program that features English, Hebrew, Yiddish and Ladino selections that celebrate Jewish culture through song.

Under the direction of Deborah Tartell, the Shireinu Choir of Long Island has grown to nearly 70 singers who travel weekly to Great Neck from all over Long Island, Queens and even upstate New York.

“It is truly gratifying to see our group grow year after year, providing an opportunity for singers to participate in a mixed voice adult choir that celebrates the rich diversity of Jewish music and culture,” said Tartell. “I am very proud of the program we are presenting on June 12 as it encompasses so many different aspects of Jewish music.”

Among the selections in this year’s program are popular Israeli songs, a touching Yiddish lullaby and a well-known melody by the celebrated singer Matisyahu. They will also be performing Leon Scher’s “Heal Us Now,” a song of healing and prayer. “This is especially noteworthy as we made a virtual recording of ‘Heal Us Now’ during the pandemic, and it’s very exciting to be performing it live for the first time,” concludes Tartell.

Like many choirs, the Shireinu Choir of Long Island suspended in-person rehearsals from March 2019 through September 2021 for the health and well-being of its members. The group remained together through zoom rehearsals and other musical programs that took the place of in-person singing.

Future engagements for the Shireinu Choir of Long Island include our debut performance at the North American Jewish Choral Festival on July 12, and the choir has also been invited to perform The Star Spangled Banner at Citifield this summer on August 14.

The annual concert of the Shireinu Choir of Long Island will be held at the William A. Shine South High School, 341 Lakeville Road, Great Neck. Tickets are $20 in advance; $25 at the door.
