The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association presented a continuation of its Favorite Poem Project event as part of its “Salut au Monde” series on Sunday Nov. 12 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Over 55 participants of all ages and backgrounds sent in their favorite classic published poem and 24 entrants read the submissions.

Danielle Campbell, news anchor from Cablevision News 12 Long Island, emceed the event. NYS Assemblyman and Huntington Town Supervisor-elect Chad Lupinacci read “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae in commemoration of Veteran’s Day.

The Favorite Poem Project was founded by former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky shortly after the Library of Congress appointed him to the post in 1997. Pinsky created the project to celebrate, document, and encourage poetry’s role in American lives. When Pinsky put out a nationwide call for Americans from all walks of life to send in their favorite poems, he received over 18,000 responses.

Pinsky’s project spread across the country with communities holding their own Favorite Poem poetry readings. For more information, visit www.favoritepoem.org
