A boat explosion in the Long Island Sound in Kings Point Friday injured four family members, according to officials from the Nassau County Police Department.

A 42-year-old man started a 2006 Four Winns Power Boat just after 4 p.m. off the coast of Steppingstone Park, officials said. The boat, which also contained the man’s 41-year-old wife, 11-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son, then caught fire and exploded shortly after, officials said.

A 13-year-old son was on a Jet Ski and went to aid the rest of his family. The man, his wife and 5-year-old son were ejected from the boat, officials said, and were transported on the Jet Ski back to shore. The daughter was removed from the bow of the boat by Steppingstone Marina employees, according to police.

The four family members on the boat were taken to nearby hospitals to treat their injuries. The 5-year-old suffered injuries to an arm and leg while the daughter sustained various cuts and bruises, police said. The wife burned her hand and suffered back and leg injuries and her husband suffered abrasions to his leg, according to police.

Kings Point Police officials said the boat fire was extinguished by a New York City Fire Department boat.  The explosion was being investigated by Nassau County bomb and arson detectives.

Officials did not disclose the identities of the family members or where they were from and efforts to reach police for further comment were unavailing.

The Great Neck Alert Fire Company, in a statement on Facebook, lauded the efforts of Great Neck Park District Launch Operator Paul Slawinski for rushing out into the water to help the family. Alert officials said they were aided by the Great Neck Vigilant Fire Department, the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department and the Port Washington Fire Department.
