North Hills elderly woman targeted in $49K scam

An 85-year-old woman in North Hills was scammed out of $49,000 by a man claiming to work for Microsoft, according to Nassau County Police.

The unknown man instructed the woman to transfer the money through her local bank branch to another bank account that he had provided for her. Once done, he then told her to send him a copy of her driver’s license and a bank receipt of the transfer to a phone number he gave her.

The woman was targeted while she was on her computer at home and prompted to call a phone number.

Nassau County Police were unable to provide additional information and had not responded to a request for comment by the time of publication.

Another elderly scam was reported by the Nassau County Police Department Feb. 22.

The victim, an 82-year-old woman in Westbury, was swindled out of $9,400 by a man she believed was her grandson. The man said he was arrested and needed the money to pay for a lawyer.

The woman agreed to meet with the man to give him the money. Afterward, her grandson informed her he was not arrested.

In the Feb. 24 press release about the Westbury incident, the police told residents to be on alert and reminded vulnerable community members about scams.
