After a winter of storms holding up construction, the Herricks Public Schools’ new turf field is complete, the district announced Friday.

The all-purpose synthetic field at Herricks High School is ready for use by students, and the track will open for community use on Monday.

The track will close again temporarily for a few days during the week of June 25, weather permitting, to be re-painted.

The field is part the first phase of projects included in a $25 million bond approved last year in a referendum vote.

In September, the board accepted a $1.5 million bid from the Amityville-based LandTek Group to install the field.

Other Phase 1 projects include the installation of “smart locks” on all classroom doors throughout the district.

The district is almost done with Phase 1 and preparing to start the second phase of the bond work.

“Projects are moving forward as planned and we are very happy with the outcome of our beautiful new athletic field,” Superintendent Fino Celano said in statement.

Celano also thanked the community for their patience while facilities were closed for construction.

In Phase 2, which will begin this summer, the district will create a new grandstand, press box and comfort station on the athletic field.

There will also be renovations to the high school cafeteria and kitchen.

“We look forward to sharing more updates during and after the summer,” Celano said.
