The Floral Park Street Fair is set to return following a three-year hiatus next week and event chairperson Billy Barry said he is excited for the village to showcase their local businesses to an extended community.

“We started planning for this after last year was canceled, we put together a committee and we’ve been working on the street fair all year,” Barry, the owner of Floral Park’s Uptown Taco, said in an interview. “It’d be great to see the fruits of our labor be a great success for the community.”

The street fair, hosted by the Floral Park Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the New York Racing Association, will take place on June 9. Setting up shop on Tulip Avenue from Verbena to Plainfield Avenue, the event will feature outdoor eateries and stores to the community and visitors coming back to say hello.

“People can expect to see the best Tulip Avenue has to offer,” Barry said. “Our local merchants, some new additions and the old favorites will be ready to welcome the community.”

Also included in the fair, he said, is face painting, balloon art, live bands, outdoor dining and more.

Last year, chamber officials sent out an email days before the event informing members of cancellations from rides, vendors and live bands. The previous two years, the fair was unable to happen due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Barry said the struggles of the pandemic years were tough on everyone, but having current and former residents make the trip out will be a welcomed reunion for local businesses.

“COVID was hard for everybody and something like this really galvanizes the community,” he said. “It’s almost a reunion of sorts for villagers and former villages that have moved out of the area and come back in for the weekend. We’ve missed that over the last couple of years.

The event will also take place the day before the 155th running of the Belmont Stakes. Barry encouraged everyone that may be coming to the area for the race to come a night early and see what Floral Park has to offer.

“We’re right in the backyard,” he said. “Floral Park has been a huge supporter of Belmont, the racetrack and the whole community. We’d love to have a great event and kickoff the weekend of the Belmont Stakes.”
