Trustees James Reddan and Kathryn Canese were re-elected on Monday to serve another year as the president and vice president of the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Board of Education.

Reddan is a lifelong Garden City Park resident who works as an engineer for the Town of Hempstead. He has served on the board since October 2014, when current Trustee Patricia Rudd resigned before rejoining the district years later.

Canese was re-elected after swearing into another three-year term as trustee. Canese ran unopposed in May and received 602 votes.

Trustee Jennifer Kerrane was sworn-in after defeating challenger Katherine Bannon with 465 votes to 180, giving her 72% of the vote.

Trustee Patricia Rudd was not present at the meeting to be sworn in but will need to within 30 days of July 1, the first day of her new term. Rudd defeated challenger Gjergji Shuku with 566 votes to 116, giving her 72% of 682 total votes.

Reddan and Rudd were also appointed to serve another year on the Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education, where they will be the district’s liaison on the eight-person board.

A district resident since 2004, Kerrane currently works as a nursery school teacher in Manhasset and has been part of the recent administration hires in the district, including a new superintendent, among other things.

Before being elected to a third term this year, Rudd was on the board for 15 years before taking a two-year hiatus in 2014 to move to Michigan for work. She also served as vice president of the board for one year during her first stint. Rudd moved back and returned to the board in 2016 after defeating Shamini Sivalingam for an open seat.

Rudd has spent years lobbying for education in both seats of power and is a member of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association. She previously said her passion is legislation and she believes that the federal government should give more control over education to the states.

Superintendent Jennifer Morrison was also sworn in for another year. She took over in 2017 following the retirement of Robert Katulak.

The next board of education meeting for New Hyde Park-Garden City Park will be Monday, Aug. 22.
