The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education said that 300 new students have joined the district, bringing total enrollment in Nassau County’s largest school district to approximately 8,400.
At a board meeting on Tuesday night, Superintendent James Grossane said Sewanhaka also welcomed about 60 new staff members for the new school year, many of whom are replacing retired teachers, support staff and teaching assistants.
During his report, he said pupil support services staff has been added to the school psychologist departments with the objective of assisting students’ emotional needs during adolescence and returning to full-time schooling.
More staff additions to the district were made over the summer, including coaching for English language learners and special education. Grossane did not specify the number of staff members hired for these positions.
He also spoke about the first Superintendent Student Advisory Council meeting of the year. He said the meetings are a great opportunity to hear student needs and he loves being able to work with students when he can.
“It truly is the best part of the job getting to interact with our students,” Grossane said.
He also commended students and staff for adhering to the COVID-19 protocols instituted by Gov. Kathy Hochul.
“We continue to see virtually no spread of COVID-19 between staff and students when in school,” Grossane said. “All cases of transmission can be traced to events taking place outside of school.”
