The Floral Park Historical Society will unveil eight new historical markers at its 20th Anniversary celebration on April 28. These markers will be installed throughout the Village of Floral Park at historically significant locations.
The new historic sites are Fireman’s Hall, 1779 Housel, Tyson Building, Floral Park School, American Legion, Floral Theatre, Masonic Temple, and Covert Homestead.
Historical society President Ann Corbett said each marker weighs 50 pounds.
During the ceremony, there will also be an exhibit of old photos that relate to each marker’s site. People associated with the historic sites will also be present, including local government and school officials.
There are currently three historical markers in the village. The first is located at Verbena Avenue in front of the United Methodist Church. The second sits on Tulip Avenue and marks both where the Seedhouse stood and where the John Lewis Childs residents were, according to a historical society press release.
The last marker resides in the pocket park at Emerson Avenue and Jericho Turnpike to commemorate the First Vanderbilt Cup Race.
Corbett said in the release that this project was launched by members of the historical society in 2017. She said it is designed to increase interest in the history of Floral Park.
A Nassau County legislative grant of $10,000 was awarded to the society which covered the cost of getting the eight new markers.
At the event, the FPHS Historical Markers & Historic Sites Photographic Exhibit, produced by archival chair Russell O’Brien, along with a number of historic building replications built by John Rossi, will also be on display.
For those wanting to see the sites, A Self-Guided Tour & Roadmap by former resident Anthony Castoro will be made available at the celebration. It gives information about all of the historic sites as well as maps showing routes to take to each marker.
“Completing this project in our 20th anniversary year is a way of connecting with the community’s adults and children in a meaningful way,” Corbett said. “I can promise the ceremony will not be boring.”
The ceremony will be at the Floral Park Recreation Center Recreation/Pool Building at 2 p.m.
