The number of burglaries in the Village of Floral Park fell sharply in 2018 from the previous year as crimes declined in general, the Police Department said Friday in an annual report.Â
The report said that there were 10 burglary cases in Floral Park in 2017 and six in 2018. Robberies were down from five to three, and larcenies were down from 34 to 26.
Aggravated assault cases increased from one to two and auto thefts increased from four to five. The number of rapes remained the same at one each year. There were no murders in the village in 2017 or 2018.
Total arrests also decreased by nine, the report showed. There were 49 arrests in 2017 compared with 40 in 2018.
The number of parking tickets increased by 2,012. In 2017, the report said, 8,929 tickets were issued, while 2018 saw 10,941 tickets issued. Uniform traffic tickets, however, decreased by 718. There were 2,416 tickets issued in 2017 and 1,698 in 2018.
The Floral Park Police Department was established in 1918 after two full-time police officers were appointed. What began as a police booth at Jericho Turnpike and Tyson Avenue has since become a full department with 31 officers serving a population of about 16,000.
Efforts to reach Lt. Thomas McCarthy were unavailing.
