Great Neck pollution control district OKs sewer connections

The Great Neck Water Pollution Control District has approved new commercial and residential property connections to the district’s sewer collection system, following recent plant upgrades.

District officials said Great Neck residents and businesses may now connect to a newer system designed to further decrease water pollution.

“We want to have as many sewer connections as possible so we can make sure all of our water is safe for the people and the environment,” said district Superintendent Christopher Murphy.

Those interested can submit a request to district headquarters for approval, officials said.

“The District carefully considers the viability of each property seeking a connection approval,” district Commissioner Jerry Landsberg said. “Additional approved connections will not impact service for existing property owners in any way.”

Properties outside of the district may apply for approval as well.

Connecting to a new system is free for residents and businesses within the district because they already pay for it in their taxes, but property owners outside of the district need to pay a capital equalization fee determined by a property’s proximity from a sewage line, assessed value and district tax rate.

“Property owners may request a connection irrespective of whether or not the property is located in the District,” district Commissioner Steve Reiter said. “However, connections are more economically feasible if the property is located in a reasonable proximity to an existing collection system sewer line.”

Added Murphy: “The equalization fee is necessary because it brings outsiders on a level term with residents who have been paying for this in their taxes for years.”

The Great Neck Water Pollution Control District serves the villages of Great Neck, Great Neck Plaza, Kensington, Thomaston and Saddle Rock as well as parts of Manhasset.
