A phone scam led to a grand larceny charge in Manhasset Tuesday, where Nassau County police say they arrested George Rodriguez after he told an 85-year-old man to meet him with $5,000 in cash to assist his grandson with legal fees.

It was the second time the victim and Rodriguez were scheduled to meet to exchange cash, but this time police accompanied the victim, according to a news release.

Rodriguez, 31, is charged with a grand larceny attempt in the third degree.

The victim first received a call on Monday, when someone told him his grandson had been arrested in Atlantic City and needed money, police said. The caller told him to bring $8,000 in cash to a meeting spot on Plandome Road, which he did, they added.

The next day, the 85-year-old man got a call saying his grandson needed another $5,000 for legal fees, according to police. After that, the victim contacted the police.

Rodriguez, of Roosevelt, was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in district court in Hempstead.
