Manhasset Public Library picks new youth services librarian

The Manhasset Public Library has hired Erin De Marco as its new youth services librarian to help develop programs focused on young adult interests in order to bridge the age disparity within the library’s community.

Trustee Robert Corrozzo said there’s a disparity within the library’s patronage, and would like to see more young adult attendance and participation.

“That is one area that is absolutely lacking in here,” Corrozzo said at the library’s board meeting on May 19.

Library Director Maggie Gough said she hopes De Marco will bring “Fandom Club” to the library, a monthly night that teens at Malverne Public Library helped create with De Marco.

“In the past, we’ve done nights of Harry Potter, comics, and Jeopardy where teens just ‘geek-out,’” De Marco said.

She said that sometimes depending on the theme, the turn out can include a younger audience.

Gough said she believes De Marco’s sense of graphic novels will also fit well with their new literacy project, and her experience in youth services and web design will be a valuable asset in attracting a younger audience.

“Erin has developed programs focused on teen/tween interests and volunteering activities that help shelter animals’” Gough said.

Library trustees reviewed the library’s selection and deselection policy of books and e-books, as a result of shifting trends.

“Manhasset people love history and high quality,” Gough said.

She said the library now has a strong base of literary fiction, mystery, and history, Elena Farrante  books, with an exponential growth in e-products.

Gough said on Monday library trustees plan to hold a small dedication reception in honor of decorated World War II veteran, John Derderian, for loaning the library a model replica of the USS Manhasset.

“The model replica of the USS Manhasset was lent to the library in May by Mr. John Derderian who, along with his three brothers, served during the war, either in the Coast Guard or the U.S. Navy,” Gough said.
