North Hempstead’s hospitals are among the best in the state, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2019 rankings.

North Shore University Hospital, NYU Winthrop Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital all scored in the top 10 for New York, ranking fourth, seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.

All four also earned national rankings for some of the 16 categories U.S. News & World Report evaluates, ranging from orthopedics to geriatrics.

Manhasset’s North Shore University Hospital earned the most national rankings: nine. In four of those specialty areas it was named in the top 30.

It ranked 11th in the nation for orthopedics, 15th for cardiology and heart surgery, 20th for cardiology and heart surgery and 21st for pulmonology and lung surgery.

Northwell Health operates both North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. The network earned a total of 23 national rankings at five hospitals.

“The 23 national rankings achieved by Northwell hospitals reaffirm the extraordinary talent, commitment and dedication of our clinical teams across the region, whose hard work, patient-focused care and superior outcomes distinguish Northwell as a destination of choice among consumers,” Northwell Health President and CEO Michael Dowling said in a news release.

NYU Winthrop Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center both earned six national rankings. St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn earned three.

“Nearly 10 years ago, we committed to achieve national prominence for Winthrop, now NYU Winthrop Hospital,” NYU Winthrop Hospital President and CEO John F. Collins said in a news release. “Coupled with our focus on improving quality and quality reporting, we worked hard to secure recognition for our improvements, such as in the U.S. News & World Report rankings. To achieve national ranking in six specialties is a true reflection of the hard work and dedication of our staff at NYU Winthrop.”

U.S. News & World Report selected 20 hospitals for its “best hospitals honor roll.” Three are in New York: New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell, NYU Langone Hospitals and Mount Sinai Hospital.

U.S. News & World Report ranks hospitals annually as a way of offering patients a resource, according to the publication.

Data that contributes to rankings includes such factors as death rates and patient experience, the latter included for the first time this year. The publication evaluated 4,653 hospitals nationwide and only 165 earned at least one ranking.
