Readers Write: Kaplan fights for equality of all in Nassau

I am writing in support of Anna Kaplan in the primary election for the New York State Senate. Anna has been a wonderful legislator for our district, taking a very active role on many bills and sponsoring several. She is an effective leader in that she fights the broader fights on issues, such as gun control, a woman’s right to choose, equal rights for all, and the prevention of voter suppression, but at the same time, she is very much an advocate for local issues as well.

For example, Anna jumped right in to help us with the proposed changes by the MTA for LIRR service on the Port Washington line and at the Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn. She has reached out to us for our opinions and to keep us informed as well as working with MTA leaders to encourage them to meet with the Town of North Hempstead leaders. She has championed the passing of gun legislation to keep us all safe. When she did so, she did so with great thought and really took the time to look at the intricacies of what was needed and what the impact would be of each decision.

For me as a constituent, I was very pleased with that, because what we need now are legislators who don’t just follow the political flow, but who think things through and make decisions that make sense for us. She has recently been involved in the passage of an amendment to codify abortion, contraception and greater equal rights in the state Constitution to protect the rights of all of us.

Anna was one of the sponsors of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of New York to protect an individual’s right to vote in New York. As an immigrant, she, like so many other immigrants in our district, knows that the right to vote is a sacred privilege, a right that in other countries is not always granted or can been taken away. And now, in our own country, many states are trying to create pathways to impede certain people from voting.

Anna’s sponsorship of this bill is at the core of who she is, one who believes in equality for all, one who believes in the fundamental principles of our Constitution. This is why I believe you should exercise your precious right to vote on Aug. 23rd to vote in primary for Anna Kaplan.
