Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has endorsed Jon Kaiman, the former North Hempstead town supervisor running for the Democratic nomination in the 3rd Congressional District.
Kaiman, 59, of Great Neck, ran the town from 2004 through 2013 and is currently the deputy executive for Suffolk County, a position he has held since 2017. Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove), who has represented the district since 2016, is running for governor.
Bellone said of Kaiman that in times of uncertainty, Congress needs leaders who can advocate.
“Jon Kaiman is one of the most effective governmental leaders in New York State,” Bellone said in a statement. “In this time of crisis, we need to send true leaders to Congress like Jon Kaiman, who will fight for our principles and deliver real results.”
Following the endorsement, the two greeted commuters and collected petition signatures at the Huntington LIRR station, where they discussed current issues.
Regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Kaiman said Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky is an example of what it means to stand up for his country.
“President Zelensky stepped up on behalf of his people and has shown real courage in the face of mortal danger,” Kaiman said.
Kaiman’s campaign said other issues commuters were concerned with included safety and affordability in the area.
In February, Kaiman sent Blank Slate Media a policy document on public safety and police reform which called on legislators to consider amendments to bail reform and changes to increase judicial discretion.
Previously speaking with Blank Slate Media about his candidacy, Kaiman touted his initiatives during his time as supervisor such as the town’s 311 call center as well as Project Independence, which provides services to seniors, started in 2005 and 2009, respectively. He also oversaw a revamped Building Department, instituting new management.
According to newly drawn lines, the 3rd Congressional District will include several areas in Westchester County and the Bronx along with Manhasset, Roslyn, Port Washington, Great Neck, Floral Park, and Whitestone, Queens, among other areas, and stretches to Kings Park in Suffolk County.
Others running for the Democratic nomination in the district include Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan, state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi, Great Neck’s Robert Zimmerman, Oyster Bay’s Reema Rasool and Melanie D’Arrigo of Port Washington.
The Democratic congressional primary will be held on June 28.
George Santos and Kevin Surdi are seeking the Republican nomination.
