Nassau County Legislator Ellen Birnbaum (D – Great Neck) welcomed the fencers from William A. Shine Great Neck South High School to the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building on Monday, June 24 to celebrate an outstanding season.

Both the boys and girls varsity teams were undefeated during the 2018-2019 regular season and later captured the Nassau County championship in February – the first time in Great Neck South history that the school swept the County titles in a sport. The boys’ team was led by coach Joshua Baravarian and senior captain, Kevin Feng; the girls were led by Catie Sagevick and senior captain Muen (Mary) Ye.

“When I went to Cornell University there was a gym requirement and there still is a gym requirement. I took fencing and little did I know how demanding and tough a sport it really is,” Birnbaum said during a presentation during the full meeting of the Nassau County Legislature. “I give you each a lot of credit for the skill and determination you had to get to the championship. It’s a great sport and I want to commend you all for becoming Nassau County champions.”
