John Lewis Childs School fourth graders recently culminated research and presentations on the school’s outdoor Pocket Prairie Garden. Created last spring, the garden grows native plants that once used to grow in the Hempstead Plains.
In their Discovery Lab lessons with Janice Hyland, the fourth grade classes were split into groups to research how to care for the garden, the specific flowers and grasses that grow in it, the history of the Hempstead Plains and benefits of the garden.
As the kindergarten classes recently released butterflies into the garden, they were invited to the Discovery Lab for the fourth graders’ presentations.
