Herricks Middle School recently hosted a Harry Potter party inviting middle school students to use their imagination and be transported to the world of Hogwarts. Student participants were able to take a potions class, experience wand making, view a demonstration with live owls, answer trivia, enjoy theme-inspired snacks and play relay games. The event is coordinated by Herricks Middle School Librarian Jodi Thompson once every three years giving student Harry Potter enthusiasts an opportunity to join in the fun once during their time at the middle school.
“Instilling a love of books and bringing books to life for the students is a way for me to help keep a culture of reading alive in the school,” said Thompson. She continued saying, “What I loved the most was seeing kids smiling, laughing and having fun all while emersed in their love of Harry Potter.” Reading promotion is one of her favorite parts of being a school librarian.
Herricks faculty and staff volunteered their time to make the three-hour after-school event a success. The event was funded by the student government and a grant written by Thompson.
