Hillside Grade School first graders in Terri Blanc and Regina Rice’s classes celebrated Thanksgiving by learning about the balloon floats in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

After reading “Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade,” the students worked on their own Thanksgiving balloons. Using markers, construction paper and other craft supplies, each student decorated a balloon as an animal they chose.

On Nov. 22, the two classes hosted their own Thanksgiving Day Parade. Parents and guardians were invited to attend to watch the parade and create a craft with their child. They also enjoyed a “Thanksgiving feast” of popcorn, cornbread and apple juice, as well as butter that the students made in-class together.
