The Sound of Music is a story about a free-spirited nun named Maria who is trying to find her way as the world becomes chaotic around her. The musical is set in Austria during the 1930s, as the Nazis are rising to power. Maria is commissioned to serve as the governess for Captain Von Trapp, a widowed naval officer, and his seven children.
Maria brings joy, laughter, and music to the Von Trapp home, while also falling in love with the Captain. When Austria falls under Nazi control and the Captain is ordered to report for service to the Nazi Navy, the family finds the strength and courage to escape through the mountains of Switzerland. Memorable songs from this beloved musical include: “Sixteen Going On Seventeen,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Me,” and “Edelweiss.”
This production will be under the direction of Gabriel Carras, English department head at South Middle School. Tickets are $10. For additional information, please call (516) 441-4600.
