Dr. Joseph Greco is senior vice president and chief of operations at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, part of NYU Langone Health. He oversees the strategic direction and daily operations of the hospital as well as the delivery of excellence in clinical care and patient safety.

Dr. Greco assumed the hospital’s leadership in 2019 and has skillfully guided it through the Covid pandemic.

“If the last 24 months have taught us anything,” said Dr. Greco, “it is that if you failed to keep up with the baseline evolution, you will not be in the position to gain opportunities when unexpected challenges occur. This was abundantly evident as we saw the advantages of a robust IT infrastructure in meeting the challenges brought on by the pandemic and delivering outstanding healthcare to the members of our community.”

Under Dr. Greco’s stewardship, the hospital introduced an advanced heart failure program, offering patients the latest clinical advances including heart-assist devices and access to a transplant program with the fastest transplant rates in the state.

The hospital also achieved designation as a Comprehensive Stroke Center—the highest-level certification—among other noteworthy achievements.

Dr. Greco, who brings to bear nearly 30 years of clinical experience to hospital leadership, previously served as the hospital’s chief medical officer. Like his own evolving roles over the years, he noted that healthcare is always “in a continual state of evolution.”

He added, “It’s so important that we understand and anticipate the needs of our patients—and never forget the impact of providing outstanding customer service.”

Dr. Greco’s depth of patient experience includes previously serving as the hospital’s Chairman of Anesthesiology, and he is Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. In addition, he was previously Chief Patient Safety Officer and was a driving force in new quality and patient safety initiatives.

Dr. Greco is a resident of Garden City. He earned his medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. His postgraduate training included an internship in internal medicine and a residency in anesthesiology at Mount Sinai, where he served as Chief Resident for Anesthesiology.

He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesia, the New York Society of Anesthesiologists, and the American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety.
