Sun shines on 21st New Hyde Park Street Fair

This year’s New Hyde Park Street Fair drew  thousands of people on Saturday, many thanking the uncharacteristically warm late September weather.

Fairgoers came out in droves for the village’s annual festivities, which gathered local businesses for an 80-degree day of food, knick-knacks, clothing and fun for all ages.

“It was a great day, it was super successful, and the weather was probably the best weather that I can remember in previous years,” said the New Hyde Park village clerk, Janet Bevers, who had a large part in organizing the event. “I thought it was a great day for our community.”

Now in its 21st year, the event spanned its usual place on Jericho Turnpike from Covert Avenue to New Hyde Park Road, and was organized by the village, Craft-A-Fair and the Greater New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce.

The number of people who attended hasn’t been determined yet, but several fairgoers said the crowd was  bigger  than usual.

“This is more crowded than past years,” said Dianella Howarth, a Stewart Manor resident. “I think it’s because the weather is so nice. It’s often kind of dreary, but this year was nice.”

Before Saturday’s event, organizers said they were anticipating 20,000 to 30,000 people.

Howarth said she is one of the residents who come  to the street fair every year, and
