Two North Shore movie venues have closed down in recent months, following a trend that has followed the local area since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Herricks Cinemas in New Hyde Park and Roslyn Cinema on Old Northern Boulevard have recently closed down.

Both locations have been listed as for sale, according to LoopNet, an online marketplace for commercial property.

In November, Herricks Cinemas on Hillside Avenue reopened following temporary closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The sign that stands outside of the venue’s entrance currently reads “Thank you for your patronage” with no movies listed outside or activity inside.

The location was one of the few remaining cinemas for Bow Tie in the state including one in Schenectady. A location in Saratoga Springs was purchased by AMC along with several other venues in Connecticut and Maryland in late April, according to a press release.

Along with its New York locations, Bow Tie has four other venues located in Colorado, Connecticut, New Jersey and Virginia, respectively. Herricks Cinemas was the company’s last location on Long Island.

In 2018, Bow Tie sold its Manhasset and Roslyn locations.

It is unclear the exact date of the Herricks Cinema’s closing is unclear but a submission to the website Cinema Treasures suggests it was in February.

The theater originally opened in 1962 and was acquired by Clearview Cinemas in 1996 before they were bought by Bow Tie Cinemas in 2013, according to the website. The 6,402 square foot property is currently for sale, according to LoopNet

The remaining movie theater venues for the New Hyde Park area include North Shore Tower Cinemas in Queens, AMC in Garden City and Manhasset Cinemas.

Roslyn Cinema at 20 Tower Place is currently for sale, according to LoopNet. It had briefly reopened following a grand reopening the weekend of Aug. 6 but has stopped providing showtime updates on Google in mid-December.

Currently, their marquee reads “See you soon.”

The venue was originally built in 1923 and renovated in 2000 and 2020 with a gross leasable area of 6,243 square feet, according to its listing.

Bow Tie Cinema in Port Washington closed in 2018 due to poor attendance and low revenues

In 2020, Squire Cinemas in Great Neck closed down after 85 years of operations.
