The Village of East Williston’s board approved a request to hold a village-wide tag sale in September and discussed early-stage plans for the village’s 100th anniversary at a meeting Monday night.

The board initially discussed the pros and cons of a village-wide tag sale with resident Elise Vaidya, who will act as a chairwoman for the tag sale and is married to Trustee Rushi Vaidya, at a meeting in May.

Mayor Bonnie Parente said she is excited about the tag sale and pointed out the decision required “a lot of consideration and a lot of compromise.”

The tag sale will be held Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Rushi said. Residents must purchase permits to sell their belongings from their front yard or driveway. Rushi said the permits will cost $30, an increase from past years’ $20 price tag. Day-of permits will cost $40, he said.

There will be no donation truck this year and no rain date, Rushi said.

At the May meeting, board members weighed whether to hold the tag sale this year, citing negatives like a steady decline in participation and “sketchy behavior” at last year’s sale. Vaidya contended a village-wide tag sale is important for community bonding.

A point of contention was the inclusion of a tag sale rain date. The mayor said she was not in favor of a rain date while Vaidya said a rain date was necessary.

In addition to the sale, board members discussed events tentatively slated for next year in celebration of the Village of East Williston’s 100th anniversary.

Trustee Raffaela Dunne said the village is planning to host a gala next April for the anniversary. The village is also planning to update the Village of East Williston history book, which was created during the village’s 75th anniversary, and design a new time capsule to be opened in about 100 years, Dunne said.

Dunne said the village will host a village-wide softball competition. The winners of the East Williston competition will then go head-to-head with the winners from the Village of Williston Park, since the two villages share their anniversary, she said.

The next board meeting will be held on June 24 at 7 p.m. at Village Hall.
