Readers Write: Wrong oak tree felled on Main Street

On June 16, the Town of North Hempstead mistakenly cut down a large oak tree on Main St. This happened despite warnings to the crew by a member of the Town’s Tree Advisory Committee. This was happening outside her office. She kept insisting that they were cutting down the wrong tree, but they went ahead anyway. Only after they cut down the tree did they realize that the diseased tree was across the street. Laughable incompetence if it was not so serious a mistake.

The Town of North Hempstead’s amended Tree Law was approved on Nov 15, 2021, and the formation of the Tree Advisory Committee was announced on Jan 21, 2022. Despite these necessary and long due actions there was no oversight and control to prevent this gross error.

The public needs to know what will be done to prevent this from happening again and what will be done to replace this tree.
