Great Neck North High scientists present at Freshman World Cup

The North High School Science Department recently hosted the 2024 Freshmen World Cup event.

This annual competition allows ninth-grade science research students to present their projects, answer questions about their methods and findings, and receive feedback that will help hone their skills as they advance in the North High science research program.

In the school library, 45 students presented 21 research projects in the field of psychology. Judges included central office administrators—including Superintendent Bossert and Assistant Superintendent Stephen C. Lando—building administrators, faculty from North High, South High, and North Middle, plus current North High seniors and research alumni.

Awards were announced the following week during the culminating event, Celebrate Science.

This year’s Freshman World Cup winners are Keshin Huang and Abigail Podwall, first place; Emma Ku and Chen (Monica) Chen, second place; Nathan Zhong and Luke Zhong, third place; Deuay (NiuNiu) Kong, Mia Li, and Abigail Volovik, honorable mention; Deuay (NiuNiu) Kong, most passionate speaker; and Regina Cho, Eric Chu, and Lucas Chang, most aesthetic board.

North High science research teachers/advisors are Christopher Bambino, Alison Widawsky, and Jessica York, department chair.
