Wheatley student dies after crashing car into NICE Bus in Old Westbury

A 17-year-old Wheatley High School student driving on Glen Cove Road in Old Westbury crashed his car into a NICE bus and died on Wednesday afternoon, according to a release from the Nassau County Police Department.

Officials said Hasan Suleman was driving a 2019 BMW southbound on Glen Cove Road near Hewlett Drive just before 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Suleman then crossed over a median and hit a NICE bus, which had no passengers on at the time of the crash, traveling the opposite direction, officials said.

Suleman suffered severe body and head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene by a Nassau County police medic.

The driver of the bus, a 63-year-old man whose name was also not disclosed in the release, suffered minor injuries before being transported to a nearby hospital, according to the release.

The driver of the bus remains in stable condition following the incident, officials said. NICE spokesman Mark Smith told Newsday the organization is “cooperating closely with the local authorities in their ongoing investigation.”

Efforts to reach law enforcement officials for further comment were unavailing.

“This is an enormous loss to our community,” East Williston School District Superintendent Elaine Kanas said in a letter to the community. “Please know that our counselors, psychologists, and social workers in each building are ready and available to support the students through this difficult time.”
