Denton Avenue School principal Dominick Tolipano said the elementary school’s recent recognition as a Blue Ribbon School is a testament to the community at large.

“It’s a tribute to the hard work of the parents, students and last not but least the faculty and staff,” Tolipano said during Thursday night’s Herricks Board of Education meeting.

School officials were recognized by the board and presented a certificate of recognition by the North Hempstead Town Board.

The U.S. Department of Education recognized Denton alongside only two other elementary schools on Long Island to receive the prestigious award.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program started in 1982 and recognizes exemplary schools on a yearly basis in two categories, superior graduation rates and test scores and closing achievement gaps for students with different backgrounds.

Denton and the other Long Island schools were cited for their high performance.

In unrelated district news, to celebrate school board recognition week, three students from Herricks Middle School played “Por Una Cabeza” on the cello and two violins.

Afterward, board members James Gounaris, Henry Zanetti, Juleigh Chin, Nancy Feinstein and Brian Hassan were each gifted a large puzzle piece that showed a group picture of the board when put together.
