During NHP car break-in, thief points gun at witness

A man has been accused of breaking into a car in New Hyde Park and pointing a handgun at a passerby attempting to take a picture of him, police said.

A 25-year-old man was driving on Cellar Avenue Aug. 12 shortly after 3 a.m. when he observed another man inside a BMW throwing items outside the driver-side window, police said.

The black four-door BMW was stopped in the middle of the road, police said.

The 25-year-old drove around the block and witnessed the same man attempting to break into another car on Evans Street, police said.

While the driver attempted to take a picture of the subject, the man appeared to point a handgun at him, police said.

The 25-year-old, fearing for his life, drove away.

Police are asking anyone with information on the incident to contact 1–800-244-TIPS or call 911.
