New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District celebrated Husky Pride and recognized the accomplishments of five Hillside Grade School learners at the board of education meeting on May 13.

Fifth graders Carita Chai, Zoe Lee and Gianna Ramos earned certificates of recognition for qualifying to participate in the Statewide Elementary Mathematics Tournament, hosted by the New York State Education Department and First in Math, at the University at Albany on June 1.

Students from each region who correctly solved the most problems in the allotted time qualified for the tournament. Only 15 students per region qualified, with a total of 150 students across the state.

Along with their invitation to the championship event, the students’ high scores earned the school a plaque and a $1,000 prize from NYSED.

Assistant principal Meghann Tedesco accepted the plaque on behalf of the school.

Then, siblings Abiel and Alina Benly were recognized for their artwork, which was selected by a panel of three judges in the Shanti Fund Peace Artworks Contest.

Their artwork will be on display in the 2024 Shanti Fund Calendar. Along with their artwork, they prepared a write-up about the artwork for the award program booklet. The awards ceremony, where the students were honored, took place in April.
