In a testament to the thriving Italian language program at The Wheatley School in East Williston, a teacher and two students have been recognized by the American Association of Teachers of Italian Long Island (AATI-LI).

Wheatley School teacher Susan Vasselman was honored by the AATI-LI as the Teacher of the Month for October 2023. Professor Vasselman has been instrumental in the formation of the Italian program in East Williston, which begins in fifth grade and continues through AP level. She is respected by both her students and colleagues for her dedication to excellence as a teacher and her moral and ethical character as a person.

In addition, two students in Professor Vasselman’s Wheatley School Italian program were named winners of the AATI-LI Summer TikTok Challenge. Eighth grade student Isabella Taddeo won for most creative video for middle school and eleventh grade student Alaina Pinto won best cultural video for high school.

The district congratulates Professor Vasselman, Isabella and Alaina for these well-deserved and commendable recognitions.
