The Village of New Hyde Park will hold its first Mother’s Day Parade May 11.

Residents who wish to walk in the parade should gather at the Lakeville Road parking lot at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. start time.

“It’s our first time doing this,” Mayor Christopher Devane said at a meeting in April. “I don’t think anybody does a Mother’s Day Parade, but who better to honor than moms?”

The parade route will snake along Jericho Turnpike and end at New Hyde Park Village Hall for an event in celebration of mothers.

The celebration will include speeches, dessert, a photo booth and flowers for moms in attendance.

“I tell people much like myself, if your mom’s not here, you can march with a picture of your mom if you so desire,” Devane said, “but let’s make it a great day in celebration of all our moms, all our grandmoms and it’s going to be a great event.”

The Mother’s Day Parade will take place the day before Mother’s Day. Village board members and personnel said they have not yet decided on whether the parade will be an annual event, like the Memorial Day Tribute Parade, because it likely depends on this year’s turnout.
