The Great Neck Water Pollution Control District has announced that it is once again hosting its biannual “Shed the Meds” event on Sunday, May 1 from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm at its headquarters at 236 East Shore Road in Great Neck.
The GNWPCD encourages the community to take advantage of its contactless drive-thru event, which provides residents with an opportunity to safely dispose of unused and expired medications as well as sharps. Before arriving at the event, residents should be sure to separate their medications and sharps to ensure their safe disposal.
“Shed the Meds is one of our most environmentally important programs at the GNWPCD and we are always excited when it comes around,” said GNWPCD Chairwoman Patty Katz. “It enables us to provide our community with a safe and easy way of disposing of possibly harmful medications and pharmaceutical waste. Community involvement in this event grows every year, and we are tremendously proud of our residents for taking the initiative in protecting our water supply.”
“Everything we do at the GNWPCD is dedicated toward protecting the Great Neck Peninsula’s environment,” said GNWPCD Commissioner Steve Reiter. “Shed the Meds provides an ideal opportunity for residents to help in that mission and we are looking forward to seeing our community coming out and supporting this important environmental project.”
This year, the Great Neck Water Pollution Control District has partnered with Reach Out America, the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition, the Nassau County Police Department and the Great Neck North High School Key Club.
Due to the community’s continued participation and enthusiasm surrounding this event, the District has been able to collect more than 3,200 pounds of pharmaceutical waste and thousands of pounds of sharps over the last six years.
